We thought it might be useful to document the process of starting an online business from scratch.
Jim Coudal and Steve Delahoyde will periodically post here about issues involving our
product and business plan. Hopefully things will go well but even if the whole thing goes down in flames,
it’ll probably be interesting to watch.

Not to sing our own praises too loudly, but usually around here it's us talking to Jewelboxing users about their projects or interviewing them for one of our Case Study features, not the other way around. But such was the case with our own Bryan Bedell who was recently interviewed by IT Enquirer about all things Jewelboxing, from what tool designers tend to work with on their projects to printing thousands of cases in bulk. Being as Bryan is our resident Jewelboxing printing expert, and just because he's a generally pleasant person, it's an interview well worth your time.
Thanks to IT Enquirer for their interest in what we're up to and here's hoping that the tough questions are being asked in Seattle, York, New York, Santa Monica, Los Angeles, Huntington Beach, Pleasant Grove, Columbia, Sunnyvale, Centreville, Portland, Napa, Boston, Farmington Hills, Palmyra, Liverpool, Palmerton, Herndon, Dallas, London, Detroit and Houston.
See that series of links over there to the right? Under the heading "Thanks for Noticing"? If you've never clicked around over there, that's where we put the links to those who have talked up Jewelboxing on their blogs, their business sites, their personal projects; anything we find or are sent that gives the system a thumbs up. We've covered some of the comments and projects here on the blog or in Examples + Inspirations, but a lot of the shorter blurbs we've seen have just been tucked away over there in that growing list. So, to avoid neglect, we thought we'd pull a batch of the good ones out and show 'em off a bit.

We'd be more than happy to lend our finest of blurbs to those in Brooklyn, Southbury, Edmonton, New York, Saint George, Gent, Loganville, Richmond, San Francisco, Toronto, Austin, Missoula, Coral Gables, Alta Loma, Potomac, Madison, Ardmore via Youghal, and Orlando.
Have we started a revolution? In reading this recent post on the terrific Zoetrope101, you'd think so. It's left us very proud that we're doing our part for the good of design...
"Some time ago we mentioned somewhere - perhaps even this very blog, that we had fallen madly, deeply in love with a CD / DVD presentation system called Jewelboxing, devised by the obviously very bright people at Coudal Partners. We mentioned then that the product really was the only way to go if you are looking for a quality delivery mechanism.
Now we're saying that you don't have a choice anymore - if you are a client, if you are a potential client who requires CD /DVD presentation, you have just had the choice of jewel case taken out of your hands.
The reason for this?
I've had it with the normal case, it breaks, it scratches, it discharges its contents on the floor without warning and the little spindles break off leaving you with no cover.
I'm over it. It makes us look bad if we have gone to all the trouble to get the content right only to present it in packaging that always makes me think it should be glued to the front of a magazine.
No if's or but's, no discussion. If you're engaging us to do a CD/DVD presentation you are up for Jewelboxing products. Simple - you get them in for us, or we will, but you will be using packaging required by us.
The cost is not high but the first impression is major, and that's what we're looking for. You might not care how your product is delivered, but we do."
They've triumphantly hoisted the Jewelboxing flag over Millers Creek, Los Angeles, St. Laurent, Zionsville, Helena, Saint Louis, Durham, San Francisco, Shpherdsville, Kentwood, Valencia, San Antonio, Tempe, Medford, Zeist, and Pearce.
We have a standing offer that if Jewelboxing is featured in a print publication and somebody sends us a scan before we find it ourselves, we'll send them a 20pack. Recently we saved $49 when the latest edition of Communication Arts arrived at the studio a full day before Allen and Katie sent scans. CA said, "Put up your dukes. Jewelboxing.com was brought about by designers who were unimpressed with their choices for CD and DVD packaging." Yes it was.
BTW, we have found our 'Mom With Design Skills' and she's hard at work on her holiday project. Thanks to everyone who volunteered. We sent them all something nice. That'll teach you to sit on your hands when we ask for entries next time. Join the mailing list at the bottom of the home page so you don't miss the next one.
Just because there's a lot of them doesn't mean we love them any less individually. Fighting a constant battle to stay caught up, we do admire the grace and insightfulness of Red Hook, Madison, Sandusky, San Francisco, NYC, Sheffield, Portland, Manchester, Ramona, Culver City, Bedford, Portland. Chicago, Alexandria, Coconut Grove, Seminole, Allen Park, Wollaston, Delft, Perpignan, London, LA, Houston, Cherry hill, Clayton, Greenfield, White Plains, Manassas, Denver, San Diego, Prince George, Royal Oak, Shorewood, Bothell, Walnut Creek, Boiling Springs, Champaign, Cambridge, Rome, Singapore, Santa Monica, Towson, Big Rapids, Venice and Suwanee.
Back from 1900 miles and ten days with the family. Chicago to Upstate NY to Toronto and back again. Perfect trip for a Jewelboxing archive of photos. Now, I've got a bit of catching up to do.
Ronnie at Tirade writes, "Jewelboxing looks like it could be another tool with which we, the great unwashed, can steal the means of production, or at least buy it on the cheap. But this doesn't look in the least bit cheap." Thanks for that. Webranding says, "Not sure why it took so long for a firm to launch a product like this, but heck it is here now. I use it at work and for my personal needs. With a little effort you can produce your own custom CD-ROM that looks like what you expect to purchase at a store." That's appreciated too.
I covered a lot of ground during the last ten days of vacation but not enough to get caught up on thanking our new friends in Harleysville, Moorpark, Portland, Drayton, Santa Monica, Austin, Lawrence, Boston, NYC, Tallahassee, Providence, Pittsburgh, Oakbrook Terrace, Columbus, DC, Brooklyn, Westerville, Cedar Rapids, Las Vegas, Chicago, Uniontown, LA, St. Paul, Windsor, Madison, San Francisco, Raleigh, Kirkland, Fairlawn, Philadelphia, Louisville, Bremgarten, Palo Alto, Sparta, Houston, Oxfordshire, Guaynabo, Bartlett and Kenosha.
"When you care enough to burn the very best, don't deliver it in one of those flimsy, bulk-buy cases. Jewelboxing will send you jackets built to be as timeless as your High Fidelity mix..." -from ReadyMade Magazine, Just on shelves, right this very minute.

"While it's getting easier and easier to create DVDs these days, the final step - creating the packaging - is a little bit harder. That's too bad because packaging is key for both storage and making a good impression. The Jewelboxing System makes it easier by giving you all the tools you need to put together pro display cases for your reel or film..."
At Coudal, we asked for someone to send us a scan of this article from RES Magazine and Nick of Creamy Orange did it first, so we're sending him a 20pack on the house.
Rumor has it we're featured in an upcoming issue of one of our favorites, ReadyMade Magazine. Scan it and send it in. First one we receive gets a 20pack too.
If aliens were to land from a hostile planet, it would be best for all of us if they found themselves in Irvine, Seattle, San Diego, Ithaca, Boston, NYC, Hampshire, LA, Lawrence, West Roxbury, Buffalo or Mission Hills.
From the July MacUser Magazine (which nobody told me about and if they had I would have been happy to send them a free 20pack so if you see us mentioned somewhere cool don't assume that we know about it, drop us a note and if it's news to us we'll take care of you) "Like all the best ideas, Jewelboxing came about when the system's founders, the designers at Coudal Partners, couldn't find an easy way to package up their digital work..." A nice sidebar on p63. Thanks for that. For more on how this thing got started, read this early entry in the JB blog.
If I don't start reeling them off in big chunks I'm never going to get cought up on my thank-yous, and that's just bad manners. So here's a big wet kiss to San Francisco, Washington, Kilcullen, LA, Corvallis, Honolulu, NYC, Boulder, Waikato, Cypress, Bury, Versailles, Philadelphia, Mt. Pleasant, Denton, Freemans Bay, Bristol, Saratoga Springs, Ft. Myers and Mequon.
I stumbled across a nice mention of our product at Greg.org and also a link to an an article in today's New York Times [reg. req.] that pretty much says what we've been saying all along. With a little training, a little talent and a little taste, pretty much anybody can be a film or record producer, smarmy or otherwise. And with our system, your products won't just look as good as commercial releases, they'll look better.
Santa Monica, Caribou, Bonita Springs, Newport Beach, Ramsey and Aventura, have your people call our people and we'll take a meeting about something.
In the current Reservocation Magazine three products are featured under "New Releases." One of them is Jewelboxing. We appreciate that.
The other two are Swigg Products, an amazing catalouge "tactile goods for human enjoyment." (I'll say) and the unstoppable Kid Robot. Check out the new Dunny Series.
Robots are evereywhere. In Brighton, Littleton, NYC, Garfield, Jackson and even El Segundo.
